Southend sensations, The Trusted, dropped their latest single and video recently, and it is nothing short of perfection.
The Southend based band have kept touch with music during lockdown by providing an abundance of livestreams, but behind the scenes was the creation of a music video and single like nothing they had done before.
The single itself is a demonstration of the teenage minds of the band, with big dreams and broken hearts. The lyrics reflect the ups and downs of life, although I also perceive them as blurring the line between dreams and reality.
A gradual increase in volume at the beginning of the track (mirrored at the end) reflects the idea of the entrance (and exit) to a dream, leading to drum beats that reflect that of the footsteps along the path of the lyrics, as though showing the establishing shot of a film. Throughout, riffs and overlays of single notes and lines demonstrate the echoes of recurring thoughts, mainly the line "we could have it all..." bringing the path of the song back to a 'dream'. The baseline provides a backbone of consistency to the song, helping to distinguish the different tones of reality (verses) and dream (choruses) while keeping the lyrics grounded until they float back to a dream in with the pre chorus line.
The video accompanies this theme perfectly with a series of videos accumulated over the years to demonstrate a fun side to the band while connecting with the audience to engage them and create a sense of interaction with the audience themselves. The overlaying titles at various points reflect the echoes of key thoughts within the song while various effects add an indie essence, reflective of the band's indie rock genre (my endless praise goes out to the director for this video!).
Overall, the single and video present various different scenarios through the blurry lines of reality, which can be interpreted in many a way, leaving the audience with one final question;
Will you sing for the innocent?
