Suffer - Walk In Coma

It's June: We are half way through the year, the sun has come out, and so has Walk In Coma's latest single.

Southend metal sensations, Walk In Coma, are back again, with another high emotion track.

I was fortunate enough to hear the latest Walk In Coma single, 'Suffer', pre-release: the people around me must have been rather confused as I *subtly* head banged on the train.

I have heard metal music be described as many different things, but my favourite is that it is a place where everyone is welcome. Having had many a conversation with metal musicians, the most common theme is that metal is therapeutic: a form of cathartic expression. These are, by far, I would argue, the most accurate descriptors. As demonstrated by 'Suffer', the sheer level of emotion portrayed, traps the listener in a whirlwind .

As with many Walk In Coma songs, the track is led by a dominating drum beat and heavy guitar riffs, paired with resonant bass and the lead vocals filled with an outpour of passion. The music video, though, really intrigued me. The first line of the track 'My dreams' sets the theme of the video, with images flashing across the screen in a frantic dreamlike manner: 'nightmare' material. The likes of masks, dolls, blood... the list goes on. The emotion evoked through this track resonates with the pain resembled in the title and thus in the video, cultivating a nightmare-scape that fuels an emotive, fearful rage, not dissimilar to the feel of 'Through Your Eyes'. This is a common trait of Walk In Coma releases: the band have a distinct way of being able to connect with the listener through the passionate vocals, drawing on experience to understand the listener and form a deeper connection with their audience. The pain that is felt through 'Suffer' can be interpreted in various ways, but the beauty of metal is that the passion is felt so deeply that it resonates in a way that is completely other to any other genre of music.

I chatted to Alex Adlington, Walk In Coma's frontman, on Episode 2 of my podcast, about the videos for 'Suffer' and 'Through Your Eyes'. You can listen to Alex's episode of the podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2ZftjR1YeSGLpMnuSjjGSK?si=c0b38a7749844550
