The Spellbinding Singles of Ella Fae

Faries had always been part of my life growing up: There's Tinkabell - arguably the most famous of them all - the Rainbow Fairy book series, the Fairy Godmother ... not only are they all faries, and, of course, fictional, but they all all offer a sense of comfort and can make everything better with their pixie dust (where can I find some?!). Ella Fae takes on the personas of these whimsical characters but meets the real world in the process.

Ella's voice is simultaneously magical and haunting. I think, perhaps, the cover art of her first single 'Haunted As Hell' sums this up perfectly. The control she has over her vocal range aids in telling the story in 'Haunted As Hell' - a tale of post breakup. As always, there are many ways a track can be interpreted, but I am going to head down the ghost route: Ghosts are a motif throughout the song, and the production includes haunting echos that linger in the depths of the track thus adding to the ghostly motif, and mirroring the title of the track. There seems, however, to be more to this. Reading between the lines, the ghost can be perceived as a powerful personification of flashbacks, with the track itself being a conflicting internal monologue.

In addition to her haunting tone, Ella's songwriting has a unique ability to tackle situations in such a way that almost brings a sense of humour due to their sheer relatability.

Taking 'Panic! In a Bathroom Stall', for instance: when it was released, based on the title alone I thought Ella had watched me on a night out.

Listening to the track, it really highlights what seems to be a taboo topic, and Ella has done this in such a personal way that different aspects of the song will relate to the audience on different levels. This track really is a whimsical whirlwind, and vividly tells a story that many people can relate to in such a direct and unapologetic manner.

Keep an eye out for when Ella next sprinkles streaming platforms with pixie dust on 18th November with her next single, 'Guilty Conscience'.
