Opposites Attract

CJ

There are some things that just should't go together. There are also some that are destined to be. Here are my top 3 "on paper they shouldn't work... but opposites attract!" moments in my musical bubble.

Temptation Greets You Like A Naughty Friend - Arctic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal

A B- side sister song by nature, this track begins like any other AM number from 'Favourite Worst Nightmare'. Catchy

riff with bouncy bass lines to match, effervescent and very fitting with the album as a whole... and then along comes Dizzee Rascal. The transitions between the artists are so seamless it is almost like a crazy dream - one of those moments where you have to rewind to ask if that really just happened. But it did. And it is marvellous. An underrated song that deserves much more credit than it is often given. - True, it would not fit with the Arctic Monkeys vibe we know today, but back in 2007, this was the perfect dynamic to attract a new demographic and explore their own direction.

Bad Habits - Ed Sheeran and Bring Me The Horizon

Is it a 'bad habit' to blend such different artists? I have heard so many mixed opinions on this collaboration: I think it perfectly demonstrates the musical abilities of both.

This was a collaboration I would never have even considered, with such different styles, different vocal ranges and different audiences. But, in this case, it is the perfect match. Every time I listen to this track, my admiration for both parties grows. The compromises and merging of the band and artists: such different genres with entirely sets of fans, united.

The power to unite fans, blend genres and reach new heights.

And that, is the power of musical collaboration.

Hangover - Alestorm’s cover of the Taio Cruz hit

Sailing across the seven seas would lead Alestorm to discover a treasure chest which contained the key to mastering a cover song... ok, maybe that's not exactly how it happened but it would have been very fitting.

Alestorm really have put their own twist on this R&B hit... and personally, I think it offers so much more than the original.

Admittedly, Alestorm are an acquired taste but that is one of the many things I love about them. There is not an ounce of any of their songs that does not fail to surprise me or make me smile, and this is no exception. The perfect party hit, this is definitely one for the playlist.
