New Hope Club - Worse

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

Having watched these boys evolve since they began on YouTube back in 2015 to the release of their debut album at the beginning of this year, this new single is proof of their musical development.

Although pop is not my go to music now, I have never stopped supporting these three boys. I had the honour of meeting them back in 2018 and honestly they are three of the nicest people I have met: they are so down to earth and are genuinely grateful for the support they are given.

Their latest single, 'Worse', explores breakups from the point of view one party in the relationship may not see: the heartfelt lyrics are relatable for many. The song begins with a simple guitar riff and rhetorical question, immediately inviting the audience in and creating a conversational tone that many of their fans would warm to. The beat picks up at the chorus, followed by a wide ranged vocal display in the second verse by George, while Reece keeps the bass line simple throughout which is complimentary to the guitar. The track is a massive step up from their debut single 'Perfume' and has demonstrated the way they have not only grown as artists, but as people. On top of this, the promotion of the song was cleverly tailored to the current lockdown situation, with livestreams every day of the week leading up to the release in different styles that are explored in the music video, which was treated like a film premiere at the end of the week. The various conventions of the 70s/80s/90s used in the video are appealing for many audiences and helps to reach a wide range of people who may not typically gravitate to this genre of music.
