Glasto on TV 2 - Arctic Monkeys, 2013

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

With gigs and festivals being cancelled, Glastonbury have streamed some past performances on TV...

If I could travel back in time to see a band, it would be Arctic Monkeys just after AM was released: the Glastonbury set at this time would have been a dream. The 2013 Arctic Monkeys era was, in my opinion, the peak of the band's music. It was a time when they played songs live from all previous albums, going right back to 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' and even playing some hits from the third and fourth albums, which are typically forgotten about, while also playing tracks from the latest album (at the time), 'AM'. It was a time when pin striped suits and slick back hair was the image presented, and Alex Turner's vocals were at their best.

The set included all of this.

Having watched many an Arctic Monkeys gig online, personally, I would say this is one of their best. The music fills the atmosphere like a disease, infecting everyone as far as the eye can see with the beautiful sound of indie/rock from the likes of 'Fake Tales of San Fransisco' to 'Fluorescent Adolescent', 'A Certain Romance' to 'Crying Lightning'. Thrown in the mix was 'Brick by Brick': a track sung by talented drummer Matt Helders and his incredible ability to multitask while drumming. A semi- acoustic version of 'Mardy Bum' was also featured: an enchanting alternative to the usual upbeat feel of the tune that captivated the audience and had them hanging on Turner's every word.
