Glasto on TV 1 - Declan McKenna, 2017

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

With gigs and festivals being cancelled, Glastonbury have streamed some past performances on TV...

The set followed the release of McKenna's debut album 'What do you think about the car?' and demonstrated McKenna's early ability to capture an audience. McKenna is renowned for his political views and expressive his opinions through his music: seeing the 'live' performance of the track 'Listen to Your Friends' sent shivers down my spine. During the bridge of the song, McKenna makes a speech clearly declaring his political views towards many topics that were (and to some extent still are) at the height of debate. As the crowd falls close to silent, McKenna uses his voice to portray his views and influence/ open the eyes of those listening. It never fails to amaze me how one man and his band can simply make people listen, and, personally, I always find it extremely powerful to watch.

Other hits that were played, included 'Brazil', 'Basic' and 'Paracetamol': all of a similar theme addressing issues in the world, both directly and indirectly.

McKenna always wows the audience with his bright and elaborate dress sense, as demonstrated in this performance. McKenna sported white shoes with rainbows on the back, co-ordinating with both his band and his jacket. His sequin jacket added an element of fun complimenting his makeup, making him stand out from his band all dressed in white. Something that stood out for me in particular was the interaction between McKenna and his band: Declan may be the star, but he never fails to showcase the talent of the musicians he works with.

The set was rounded off by McKenna crowd surfing and interacting with his fans, portraying a down to earth image, only separated from the audience by his performance.
