Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran say it best.
In the past few weeks, I have gone through some of the biggest changes in my life so far - and needless to say music has soundtracked that - but it got me thinking about how we associate music with different periods of our lives. I have so many Spotify playlists that soundtrack periods of my life. I have my Covid-19 playlist, my 'Taylor Swift Agony Aunt' one, my Platinum Jubilee playlist ... but I also have playlists that act as a comfort cuddle, playlists for morning motivation, holding your head high and nostalgic throwbacks.
My 'Nostalgic Party' playlist is by far one of my favourites. It is a collection of songs that I grew up with, that I associate with different parts of my life. The playlist in itself takes me on a journey: I could hear a song that takes me back to a year 6 school disco, a breakup, falling in love, anxiety before a job interview, excitement before my first concert...
Casting my mind back to these different periods in time reminds me how far I have come and how hard I have worked to be where I am now, in all aspects of life. It fills me with both joy and sadness at the same time, but ultimately a sense of pride. Of self development and accomplishment. And the best thing? I know that the more experiences I have, and the more I continue to push myself, the more songs I can add to my playlist that will transport me to these times. The times that have and continue to shape me. And isn't that an exciting notion.
